More on Peppermint:
Peppermint is a hybrid of water mint and spearmint with the oil being produced by steam distillation of the aerial parts of the flowering plant. Menthol, which has beneficial anaesthetic properties, makes up a lot of the ingredients which is why it has such a fresh, minty smell and flavour. As well as menthol, peppermint also contains good levels of omega 3 fatty acids, calcium, vitamins A and C and a selection of minerals.
Peppermint essential oil can be used in a lot of different ways and for a lot of different things. This is because it has antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and carminative properties. As well as many external benefits (which we go through below), peppermint can help ease digestion, headaches, stress, nausea and act as useful pain relief.
Clearing Acne
Peppermint oil’s antibacterial properties can work as a natural alternative for clearing acne-prone skin. Best used in conjunction with two drops of eucalyptus oil, five drops of peppermint oil diluted with one tablespoon of maracuja oil can be dabbed directly on pimples and left to absorb overnight.
Stress Relief
Peppermint is an effective natural pain killer and muscle relaxant as it can help soothe any aches and pains. Inhaling diffused peppermint oil can help unblock your sinuses and offer relief for blocked or itchy throats, opening all your airways.
Enhanced Shampoo
For a cleansing and energizing boost to your regular haircare routine, add a few drops of peppermint oil to your shampoo. The antiseptic properties of peppermint oil make it ideal for DIY scalp treatments and clean, healthy roots.
Soothing Itchy Skin
Similar to lavender oil, one of the top benefits of peppermint oil is its ability to soothe dry or irritated skin. Dilute two drops of pure peppermint oil in one tablespoon of aloe vera gel or warm coconut oil and smooth over itchy or dry skin. Add a drop of tea tree oil for added relief.
Bug-Off
As much as we may love peppermint oil, bugs hate it. Spray a bit of diluted peppermint oil to fend off ticks, spiders, ants, and mosquitoes. Natural bug sprays use peppermint oil as one of their active ingredients.
Hair Growth
Combine a few drops of peppermint oil with about a tablespoon of coconut oil and massage over your scalp and through your hair. You can also sub the coconut oil with emu oil, known for nourishing hair and naturally boosting growth.
