People have been advocating the importance of moisturizer for generations. In fact, I’m sure it’s pretty safe to say most of us own at least one moisturizer! It makes sense since it’s one the most impactful skincare products on our shelf and our skin would be dry and dull without it.

With all the information out there, it can sometimes be confusing to figure out what is true vs what isn’t. So we rounded up a list of the most common moisturizer myths that you need to beware of!

Myth 1 : You should apply moisturizer once your skin is dry: Although it might sound odd, you should technically be applying your moisturizer when your skin is still slightly damp. Doing this will help to lock in any excess water sitting on the surface of the skin and maximize the absorption of the product at a much deeper level.

Myth 2: The more the better: While moisturizer is extremely hydrating and soothing, there is such thing as applying TOO much. If your’e constantly putting on layer after layer, your pores will eventually get clogged and cause breakouts. Instead, try using a blueberry-sized amount of moisturizer each time.

Myth 3: Moisturizer with SPF is enough sun protection: While this claim might work in the winter months when an SPF 20 or 30 would suffice, it’s definitely not enough for the rest of the year. That’s why it’s important to use at least an SPF 50 with UVA and UVB protection to block out any harmful and damaging UV rays. Make sure to apply your moisturizer before your sunscreen since your SPF should be the last thing you put on your face to seal everything in.

Myth 4: The heavier the better: Many people assume that the heavier their cream is, the more hydration it’ll provide but that definitely isn’t the case. What’s important are the ingredients in the moisturizer and knowing what your skin type really needs. For instance, if you have really oily or acne-prone skin you should stay away from heavy moisturizers and opt for water or gel-based ones instead.

Myth 5: You should apply moisturizer right after cleansing: Layering your products correctly makes a HUGE difference in the appearance of your skin. So once you finish cleansing, move on to your toners, then serums, THEN moisturizer, followed by SPF. One great way to remember is to always layer your products from thinnest to thickest so that everything can absorb into the skin effectively.

Myth 6: You don’t need moisturizer if your skin is already oily:Not true at all. If you’re someone with oily skin it may seem weird to apply more hydration but by skipping this step, you’ll dehydrate your skin even further causing it to produce even more oil! So make sure to moisturize everyday, twice a day with a lightweight gel or water-based cream. If you’re someone with extremely dry skin then a thicker moisturizer is the way to go. My personal favorite moisturizer right now is the 10-20 Neroli Revival Face Cream from Lheritier 1789. I love it because it contains ingredients such as, aloe vera, lavender, tea tree, Vitamin E, green tea, and coconut oil to help in the regeneration of skin cells and slow down the visible signs of aging. Plus it’s sourced and locally made in Kenya!
